The Development Status and Trend of Short Video Industry in China

Abstract: China's short video industry is changing from "blue sea market" to "red sea market". The market pattern of "two super strong players (Douyin and Kuaishou) plus several other large players" has been generally stable with small changes. The long and short videos show a trend of integrated development in the competition, "short videos + live broadcast" has become a popular communication form; the mainstream media have invested heavily in the short videos, and the social value of short videos in the deep integration of media has become increasingly prominent. Among the industry's hotspot areas, the multi-dimensional scenes promote the integration of "short videos" with other industries, the differentiated investment distribution innovates the profit model, the short video innovation improves urban communication and rural revitalization, and the platforms' sense of social responsibility helps with the orderly development of the short video industry. However, content homogenization and shallow narration, frequent infringement and live broadcast chaos, Internet addiction and unfriendliness to the seniors, difficulties in going global and capital interference have become the key problems to be solved in the development of the short video industry. In the future, the industry will further integrate into social development under the trend of video dominance, intelligent manufacturing, inclusion of the lower-end users and growing media influence.
